Ficus alii

DESCRIPTION

The Alii is the typical tree that, in appearance, does not seem to belong to the genus to which it belongs (in this case Ficus) when compared to others of its species. But it is that difference that makes it so beautiful and special. What difference are we talking about? Its leaves, of course.

Scientific name: Ficus maclellandii cv 'Alii'

Curiosities: its origin is Southeast Asia to the Philippines. It is usually grown as a houseplant, although in warm climates it will grow outdoors.

If the plant is placed against a wall, it is best to turn the plant every few days to prevent the back of the plant from losing its leaves. Its leaves and branches are very light-seeking and grow in that direction. If the plant is not rotated from time to time, the part of the plant that does not receive light will eventually lose its leaves.

CARE

Temperature: It grows well in an environment between 18º and 25º. Locate away from draughts. Below 10ºC it could be damaged.

Light: It needs to be located in a place with good lighting, but never in direct sunlight, as this can burn its leaves.

Watering: every 2 weeks, it does not like excess humidity, so try not to leave stagnant water in the saucer, under the pot.

Fertilizer: Use specific fertilizers for green plants. Fertilise every 15 days from February to June.

Transplanting: Transplant in spring to a pot slightly larger than the current one.

Specimen height: Between 160-170 cm including pot.

Maximum height: It reaches a height of 2 to 2.5 metres, although it can grow up to 20 metres in its original sites. It can be controlled by pruning.
